The Italian Lakes provide the quintessential weekend break for travellers and holiday-makers alike. Speckled across Lombardy, and straddling the borders of the Piedmont and Veneto regions, the most popular lakes include Lake Como, Lake Garda, Lake Maggiore, Lake Iseo and Lake Orta which offer stunning scenery, pretty villages and exhilarating views along with their own unique charm.

Lake Como is widely considered to be the most beautiful of the Italian Lakes. Hemmed in by snow-dusted mountains, the chic Lake Como attracts its share of celebrities and tourists, especially during the summer months when temperatures are high in the lakeside towns. If you’re looking to beat the crowds, visit during spring or autumn for milder temperatures and gardens abloom!

Lake Garda, Italy’s largest lake is remarkably diverse and bursting with character. The southern shore is surrounded by soft hills and open waters whilst the steep cliffs of the north offer breath-taking views. Water sports, beaches and theme parks are usually the main attraction for families who visit during the summer months. For those looking for a more laid-back experience, we recommend a relaxing sunset boat trip around the Sirmione peninsula before an evening of organic wine-tasting at Villa Calincantus.

Lake Maggiore is the second largest lake in the region. It’s a peaceful spot with impressive views, terraced gardens and tranquil lakeside villages. There are also plenty of walking and cycling routes for those looking for an active getaway. On the eastern side of the lake, Val Veddasca is where you will find tracks and paths for excursions suitable for all levels of fitness, surrounded by beautiful landscapes and nature.

Lake Iseo is a lesser-known, smaller lake situated just north of the cities of Brescia and Bergamo – an hour and 20-minute drive from Orio al Serio International Airport. It’s an ideal destination for holiday-makers who prefer exploring off the beaten track with fewer crowds. Ferries operate all-year-round, making it convenient to visit during the out-of-season months – we recommend visiting in autumn when temperatures are mild and the picturesque landscape of the wooded hillsides reflect glorious shades of red, brown and gold.

Lake Orta is undoubtedly one of the most captivating lakes and despite its small size, the tranquil, exclusive atmosphere is perfect for a romantic weekend away. It’s no surprise the inspiring backdrop attracts poets and writers from all over the world who visit to replenish and indulge their imaginations. After a relaxing day at the lake, explore the cobbled backstreets where you will find cosy candlelit restaurants and wine bars.
